Standing Fire Advisory Council (SFAC)

Post-independence The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India set up an “Expert Committee” in 1950 to look into heterogenous and ill-equipped condition of fire services. The Government of India in 1952 communicated decisions on the recommendation of “Expert Committee” to all State and UT governments for implementations.

The Government of India convened conference of the Chief of Fire Services in 1955 as State governments have not implemented expeditiously recommendations of the “Expert Committee”.

The Standing Fire Advisory Committee was constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the recommendation of the Conference of the Chief of Fire Serv

The Standing Fire Advisory Committee was renamed Standing Fire Advisory Council in 1980. Since inception SFAC is playing pivotal role in co-ordination at national level for continuous upgradation of fire safety management and putting combined view of all State / UT fire services to Government of India for policy or financial matters.

Fire Adviser under Directorate General Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards [DG-FSCD&HG] act as the Member Secretary of the Committee.

SFAC proposed the moto of Indian Fire Services as “We Serve To Save” in the year 1958 (4th meeting) to the Government of India.
