Fire service is being maintained by concerned State, UT and Urban Local Bodies (ULB) since independence.
As per 12th schedule of the Constitution under the provisions of Article 243W, fire services in India come
under the domain of municipalities. Twelfth Schedule was added by the 74th Amendment Act of 1992 with effect
from 01/06/1993, and this schedule of the Indian Constitution contains the powers, authority and
responsibilities of Municipalities. The schedule has 18 items and item no. 7 covers "Fire Service".

At present, twenty one out of twenty eight states have state run fire service and in remaining seven states namely Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana fire service is maintained by Urban Local Bodies (ULB), i.e. Municipal Corporations / Councils and Special Planning Authorities (e.g. M.I.D.C / C.I.D.C.O.).
